On Friday after work, I headed out to Rosenberg, TX to visit Pavlock Farms. I have bought produce from Greg Pavlock for over 15 years. The Pavlocks used to be located in Stafford, but in 2006, they moved to Rosenberg to continue farming. With the cities of Houston and Sugar Land growing towards each other, it only made sense to get further away. The best part about the produce at Pavlock Farms is that most of the produce you are buying was walked right out of the field behind the barn. Mr. Pavlock cooperates with other farmers in order to make sure that he has a great selection of fruits and vegetables.
When I called Mr. Pavlock on Thursday and asked if I could come out to take some pictures, he said, “You mean you want to take pictures of vegetables and fruit? Well, okay….” I am sure he was very puzzled. But, I am hoping that after seeing the pictures that I got at his farm, he will understand. When you work with fruit and vegetables all day long, they lose their mystery; but when you live in the city, it is a great experience to be able to go out in the field as they are growing and see them in their natural state. This produce is not the wax covered shiny stuff you find in the grocery store, it is what is as it came of the vine.
When you walk in to the barn at Pavlock Farms, you are greeted by tables of fresh Onions, Potatoes, Corn, Okra, Cucumber, Cabbage, Cantaloupe, Green Beans, Watermelon, Honey dew melons, peaches and much more. To add to the selection, Pavlock Farms also carries a wide selection of locally made jams, jellies, syrup and honey.
When you walk into a farmer’s market like the one at Pavlock Farms, you get a sense that this is no different than the farmer’s market that your grandparents used to shop at. Coupled with the friendly smiles, it makes for a good getaway from the city.
If you want fresh produce straight from then head out to Pavlock Farms and pick some up:
